Uploading Images and Videos to your website

Paul Bradley -

Introduction

You might like to use new images or videos on your website. For example, if you are writing a new article then that might be an opportunity to include such imagery to go along with that.

Before you can start using these, they will need to be uploaded first to what is known as the ‘media library’. Fortunately this is straightforward to do!

Uploading to the Media Library

To use images on pages or posts, they need to be uploaded to the website’s media library. This is essentially a directory that catalogues all media files uploaded to your site in one place. It allows easier housekeeping of uploaded media. You can upload the following:

  •     Images (.jpg, .jpeg, .png, .gif, and .ico).
  •     PDFs.
  •     Word documents.
  •     Excel spreadsheets.
  •     PowerPoint presentations.
  •     Adobe Photoshop documents.

To access the media library, click on the ‘media’ link in the dashboard. You then have two options:

  • Library - you can access the whole library with this link
  • Add New - to upload new content, click this link

Add new

To upload new media items, click the option for ‘add new’. You will then be given the option to either drag your files into the upload box, or preferably you can click the option for ‘select files’. The latter will open up your computer. Simply find where the item was saved and click to upload.

Library link

Click the library link. This will open up the library showcasing all of the uploaded media content in a table view.

If you have a lot of media uploaded, you can use the filters above. A useful one is to sort the content by media item, such as filtering to show only images for example.

Additionally, to find out more information about each uploaded item, if you click on one it will display information about that particular media item.

To upload a new item, click the ‘add new’ button at the top.

How to delete media items

Over time you may find you have uploaded a lot of items and as a result your media library will be quite busy. It might be worth then doing a bit of housekeeping and removing any items that are outdated or no longer needed. For example, if you have images of staff who are no longer at your business, those potentially can be removed.

To delete, click on its listing in the media library. Doing this will provide you with information on the right. Within this, there is a link near the bottom to delete permanently. Click on this and you will be asked if you are sure you want to delete. Click ok to confirm deletion.

Adding a video from an external website

Videos by design have a much bigger file size which exceeds the limits of the media library. Generally the website shouldn’t be ‘hosting’ videos from the media library anyway. Instead it is preferrable that such videos are uploaded to external hosting sites such as YouTube or Vimeo as those are more suitable.

But should you wish to then ‘take’ a video and add it to your website, what you can do is embed the video link to a page or post. That way the website is technically not hosting the actual video but simply drawing it to be used.

To do this, click on Add Media button you see and then click ‘Insert from URL’. This allows you to enter the link of the video. For example if you want to embed a Youtube video, copy its link and then paste that into the link field. Make sure you include the HTTPS, as Youtube and Vimeo use this encryption - e.g. https://www.youtube.com/.

You will know this will work when a preview of that video is displayed in the whitespace underneath. Here is an example below.

If you want to add a video to a blog article you’re writing, click ‘Insert into post’ to embed the video into your blog post. You will now see it applied. Note for a blog article, the 'add media' button is in the top-left, just above the toolbar.

If you want to add it to pages such as a service page, you will need to use the visual builder. But the principle is more-or-less the same. Go to the page and edit the section where you want the video to be. For example, let’s say you want to add video in a text module so edit that module.

In the toolbar, you can see a button called ‘add media’. This again links to the media library so embed the video in the same way.

Alternatively, you could use the visual builder's video module. If one is not already on the page, edit the area you want the video to be in. Remember, as it is a mobile you will want to look for anything in grey. In this case, you will need to find a circular button with a plus icon in grey. This will allow you to add a new module.
